David SHONGO

Community & Education Residency || 01 Jul to 30 Sep 2026

David Shongo’s work explores the interaction between sound and image, focusing on the movements and the poetic impact they generate together. In his practice as a composer and visual artist, David’s work analyses the formation of personal and collective memory in his home country, Congo. At the same time, he questions the notion of absence not as a void, but as a political strategy of silencing. Much of his practice is also influenced by his personal familial history, marked by an absent father who did not acknowledge him at birth.

While in residence, David will continue explorations into “silence” in personal and collective memories in relation to social inequalities perpetuating worldwide today. He intends to conduct research on the 1942 Battle of Singapore, engaging with oral accounts and archival materials that remain from that era.
