Curatorial & Research Residency || 01 Oct to 31 Oct 2025
Mario A Llanos’s work explores the networks within and beyond the Caribbean—unveiling connections between notions of land, sea, human and non-human that tie us together. Extending from Pan-Carribean notions and ideas, he establishes a link between historical processes and landscapes through the metaphor of writing and inscribing knowledge in water—to consider the flow of currents and tides, particularly the Middle Passage, and the connections beneath waters across the world. Mario is also Co-Director of Radio Huracán—a sonic project which generates “sound hurricanes” where sounds meet and collide continuously—and is also part of Oficina de Situaciones—a collaborative network which encourages horizontal exchange of knowledge across the Caribbean.
While in residence, Mario will be expounding upon the concept of “maritory,” to recover its original essence as a constructive critique of territories. Using the mangrove as a medium for connection and the mangrove ecosystem as a focal point, he will be delving into Singapore’s maritime history and environmental (re)construction efforts, drawing links between Barranquilla and Singapore.
