Community & Education Residency || 01 Jul to 30 Sep 2026
The collaborative practice of jee chan and Sharon Mercado Nogales looks to the parallels between various spirit cultures and traditions practiced in Singapore and the Bolivian Andes. This strand of interest draws from their familial experience of Peranakan Chinese and Andean ancestral worship respectively. For jee, their work moves across performance, film, installation, voice and song to address themes of ancestry, syncretism, grief, loss and deep historical violence. For Sharon, her practice extends from music and dance archives from live Andean culture and practices of remembrance to explore movement and performance.
While in residence, jee and Sharon will continue to build new understanding around shared and overlapping cultures while in dialogue with one another. Together, they propose animist, decolonial and syncretic worldviews in an era defined by political and ecological failures. As part of their methodology, they emphasise techniques of “knowing” through the body—cooking, dancing, singing, working with bodies of land-water and social festivity.
