The Current/s We Call Home (Arus Berlabuh Kita)

Commissioned by Singapore Art Museum for RISING50
Presented in partnership with Asian Civilisations Museum

The Current/s We Call Home (Arus Berlabuh Kita) is a collaborative art and sound installation by Indonesian artist Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul) and Singaporean artist Samantha Tio (Mintio), exploring the diasporic experiences of families living and travelling between Singapore and Indonesia. The work, inspired by the folk melody of Dayung Sampan – a popular tune in both countries – imagines sea voyages captained by children from both countries, and harks back to our shared histories and friendship.

About the artists

Kabul from Indonesia and Mintio from Singapore have been formally trained in painting and photography respectively. The duo established the Ketemu Project Space in 2015, a platform for projects and residency programmes in Bali, with the goal of developing projects that involve community members to encourage social empowerment.
