What stories can you tell without storybooks?

 

Inspired by Hiroshi Sugimoto’s series of Dioramas and In Praise of Shadows, join us to create your own diorama which can tell a story entirely on its own.

 

Through a one-hour guided session of exploration and tinkering, children will play with flashlights and everyday objects to discover how shadows take on surprising shapes!

 

In this workshop, children will:
- Learn to identify materials that can form shadows
- Explore how the position of the light source and objects affects the shape and size of shadows
- Express their stories or ideas through a self-made shadow diorama

 

This programme is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form Is Emptiness and in collaboration with KidsSTOP.

Beginning with a guided encounter in the exhibition, participants will observe how repeated gestures gradually build visual rhythm and surface.

Using ink, water, and paper, participants will experiment with wet-on-wet techniques to create layered compositions. As ink spreads, settles, and transforms, they will respond to both intention and chance, discovering how repeated gestures leave traces through the creative process.

Known for building her works through the repetition of countless marks, Taniguchi's practice reflects patience, focus, and the gradual accumulation of simple gestures into a compelling whole. In this workshop, participants will translate these ideas into textile art, exploring how threads can create expressive linework and texture.

 

Guided by an experienced instructor, you will learn the basics of punch needle as you create your own inspired piece.
