Community & Education Residency || 01 Apr to 30 Sep 2026
Hong Shu-ying collects, reframes and sequences found images and traces of the everyday as materials to produce books, moving images and other printed matter. Rendering visible the repetitions and contradictions within these materials, she creates reflections and time capsules that explore alternative knowledge systems and methods of dissemination. Her recent projects explore informal archives, including handwritten annotations in musical scores and amateur videos. Valuing the everyday and amateur creations as earnest expressions of curiosity, creativity and dedication is core to Shu-ying’s practice.
She is deeply inspired by her experiences growing up in amateur Chinese orchestras and consuming user-generated content on the internet.
While in residence, Shu-ying will engage with the residency studio as a huge and porous practice room. She will employ notations and improvisation as an alternative way to document and reflect upon what happens in the practice room—a site where one plays to learn and learns to play.
