Skill Futures: Terang Benderang by Khairullah Rahim

Light is essential for all living organisms to thrive. What happens then when one is overexposed? This screening event presents Terang Benderang (Clear and Vivid), a new experimental documentary by Khairullah Rahim. The work is part of his ongoing research into on the lived experiences and conditions of the communities in Boon Lay, Singapore. Through a series of observations, it will unravel the overlaps between aspirations, resources, safety, and autonomy in the neighbourhood.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with SAM curator Joella Kiu. This session is held in conjunction with the series Skill Futures.
About the artist
Khairullah Rahim is an artist working across mixed-media installation, object-making, painting, photography and moving image. He is a graduate of Rutgers University (New Jersey, US) with an MFA in Visual Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2023; and received a BA in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore) in 2013, where he currently teaches as an adjunct lecturer.
His explorations delve into complex strategies of resourcefulness for everyday survival in environments under constant surveillance. Through various means of collaboration and critical thinking, his practice considers mindful ways of shedding light onto the veiled narratives of his community while factoring in the necessity for opacity. Recurring points of departure in his work premise around themes of queerness, desire, resistance, aspiration, labour and ethics of disclosure.
about Skill Futures
In a time when the physical and digital are blurred, what skills do we need to understand and critically shape our hybrid realities? Artists are now being asked to invest in digital skills more than ever: to "upskill" and pursue "personal development," to prepare to emerge on the other side of COVID equipped for a future whose material and digital realities will be even more intertwined. But what does it mean to become "smarter"? To what ends are new technical skills being pursued? Skill Futures is a digital commissioning platform of the Singapore Art Museum, which features performances, workshops, and experimental lectures. It elaborates on the new forms of "intelligence" that emerges from different ways of reading the screen as a speculative medium of the future.
